Iglesia de San Andrés

The Iglesia de San Andrés is the oldest surviving parish church in Ponferrada, its Romanesque foundations dating to the 12th century. The building has been altered and added to across the centuries — there is a Gothic apse, a Baroque doorway, and a 20th-century restoration that tried to unify the whole — but the result is more characterful than a purely one-period building would be. The church stands at the edge of the old quarter, overlooking the newer part of the city.

Pilgrims walking the Camino de Santiago sometimes stop here before heading on to the next stage west. The church is usually open for morning and evening Mass; the rest of the time opening hours are uncertain, but the exterior and the surrounding street are worth a few minutes regardless.
