When to Go

Ponferrada sits in a sheltered valley and has a milder climate than the exposed Castilian plateau to the east. Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October) are the best times to visit: the Camino is busy but not overwhelmed, the temperature is comfortable for walking, and autumn brings the chestnut harvest and the wine vendimia. Summer is hot and busy with pilgrims; July and August see the biggest crowds.

The Fiesta del Señor del Camino in mid-October is the city's main festival, featuring music, processions, and an extraordinary display of fireworks along the river.
