Christopher Columbus Museum

The Casa-Museo de Cristóbal Colón sits on the site of the house where Christopher Columbus is generally accepted to have died in 1506. The original building was lost long ago; the current museum, opened in 1968 and expanded in 2006, includes a reconstruction of the house alongside modern exhibition halls.

Inside, the displays cover the four voyages, the pre-Columbian civilisations Columbus encountered, navigational instruments, replicas of the famous letters, and the complicated afterlife of the Columbus story. It is a thorough rather than scintillating museum — worth a visit if you have a half day to spare, especially in combination with the National Museum of Sculpture.

A story
Columbus died in Valladolid on 20 May 1506, poor and out of favour, in a modest house on what is now Calle Colón. By then he had returned from his fourth voyage and was still trying to recover the privileges Ferdinand and Isabella had promised him. The museum stands beside a reconstruction of that house.
