Palacio de Santa Cruz

The Palacio de Santa Cruz, built between 1486 and 1491 for Cardinal Mendoza, is considered the first Renaissance building in Spain — a key transition from the late Gothic that still dominated the country to the Italian classicism that would arrive a generation later. The facade still carries some Gothic detailing, but the proportions and the rusticated stonework are unmistakably new.

The building has belonged to the University of Valladolid since the 19th century and houses university administration and the Museo de Arte Sacro. The patio is a quiet Renaissance courtyard with three storeys of slim columns. Combine a visit with the cathedral and university — all three are within a short walk.
