Museo de Arte Abstracto Español

One of Spain's finest collections of abstract art, installed since 1966 inside two of the Hanging Houses. Fernando Zóbel, a Spanish-Filipino painter, founded the museum and donated his own collection; it grew to include major works by Antonio Saura, Gustavo Torner, Gerardo Rueda, and other members of the El Paso and Cuenca abstract movements. The rooms are small and the light atmospheric, which suits the paintings. The combination of the setting — medieval cliff-edge buildings — and the modernist contents is unlike anywhere else in Spain. Closed Mondays. story: > Fernando Zóbel chose Cuenca deliberately: he believed abstract art needed an unusual setting to be seen properly.
