Cuenca rewards slow exploration. The old city climbs the promontory in layers — from the bustling Plaza Mayor up through narrow lanes to the cliff-edge Casas Colgadas — and nearly every corner reveals a new angle on the gorges below. World-class contemporary art sits alongside medieval churches, and the surrounding Serranía landscape draws hikers and climbers. Allow at least a full day; two is better.
