Bridge of Henares

The Bridge of Henares (Puente del Henares) spans the Henares River on the northern edge of the old town and is one of the more handsome surviving medieval bridges in Castile. The current structure dates from the 15th century, built on earlier foundations, and consists of nine arches spanning the river in a gentle curve. From the bridge there are good views upstream and downstream, and the gardens along the riverbank below make for a pleasant walk.

The Henares valley below the bridge was the scene of fighting during the Spanish Civil War, and a number of defensive structures from that period survive in the surrounding countryside.
