Campo de Criptana, 30 km southwest, has the largest surviving cluster of La Mancha windmills — ten mills on a ridge above a whitewashed old town, three of them dating from the sixteenth century and among the oldest in Spain. The combination of mills, narrow streets, and a Sara Montiel museum makes it a fuller stop than it might appear on a map. Belmonte, 15 km west, adds the castle of Belmonte — one of the best-preserved Gothic-Mudéjar fortresses in Castile, with intact rooms you can actually walk through, not just photograph from outside.
