Church of San Miguel

The parish church of San Miguel stands at the heart of Mota del Cuervo's old town, its tower visible from the surrounding plain almost as clearly as the windmills on the ridge above. The building is largely from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, constructed in the sober Castilian style typical of La Mancha — thick stone walls, minimal exterior ornament, and an interior that focuses attention on the altar rather than the architecture surrounding it. The tower, added in the eighteenth century, is the most distinctive feature from the outside.

Inside, the church preserves a series of gilded retablos from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, including the main altarpiece dedicated to the Archangel Michael. The scale of the building — considerably larger than you might expect for a town this size — reflects the relative prosperity that the grain and saffron trades brought to the region in the early modern period. The church remains in active use and is generally open during morning and evening services; the tourist office can advise on current visiting hours.
