Iglesia de Santiago

The church of Santiago is one of the finest Romanesque parish churches in the province of Guadalajara, built in the late 12th century in a style very similar to the lower parts of the cathedral. The south portal is particularly good, with carved archivolts and column capitals showing the geometric and figurative decoration typical of the Castilian Romanesque. The building is compact and solid, very much a working parish church rather than a prestige project, which gives it a different quality from the cathedral a few streets away.

The interior has been altered over the centuries but retains its Romanesque character in the nave and apse. The church sits at the lower end of the historic quarter, near the medieval city gates, in an area where the town still feels genuinely lived-in rather than given over entirely to tourism. Opening hours are limited; the best chance of finding it open is during morning or evening Mass.
