The Church of Santa Maria la Mayor anchors the old centre, close to the Plaza del Pan and the streets where Talavera's historic core is easiest to read. It is sometimes called the Colegial, and its broad Gothic-Mudejar presence gives the city a dignity that can be easy to miss from the busier roads.
The exterior rewards a slow look, especially the brickwork and the way the church sits among the surrounding civic buildings. Step inside if it is open, but do not be surprised if access is limited outside service times.
