City Walls and Albarrana Towers

Talavera once had three lines of walls, and the surviving stretches of the first enclosure are among the most atmospheric parts of the city. The square towers and projecting albarrana towers recall the town's Islamic and medieval frontier history.

Walk the preserved sections around the old centre rather than expecting one continuous circuit. The walls are best treated as a series of fragments: a tower here, a stretch of masonry there, and sudden reminders that Talavera was once a fortified place on a strategic river crossing.

A story
Talavera's walls reused stone from earlier Roman buildings, including inscriptions and tomb fragments. That kind of recycling was practical, not romantic, but it means the defences quietly carry pieces of several older cities inside them.
