Pont Vell Restaurant

One of Besalú's best-regarded restaurants, situated close to the bridge with views toward the river. The menu is firmly rooted in Catalan cuisine, with a strong emphasis on ingredients from the Garrotxa — the volcanic-soil vegetables that come from the region to the west are noticeably better than the Catalan average, and the kitchen makes good use of them.

Expect escudella (the traditional Catalan broth with pasta and meat), botifarra (local pork sausage, grilled and served with white beans), and hearty stews that reflect the inland Catalan tradition rather than the coast. The wine list includes bottles from the local DO Empordà appellation. Book ahead on weekends and in July and August.
