The Romanesque church of Sant Pere is the architectural centrepiece of the old quarter. Built in the 11th and 12th centuries, it is one of the better-preserved examples of Catalan Romanesque architecture — solid, austere, and built to last. The church contains an unusual double apse at the east end, a rare feature that makes it worth seeking out even for visitors who have seen their share of Romanesque churches.
The cloister was largely destroyed over the centuries and only fragments survive, but the church itself stands largely intact. When open, the interior is calm and dimly lit, a contrast to the busy streets outside.
