Aiguamolls de l'Emporda

Aiguamolls de l'Emporda is one of Catalonia's best wetland reserves, a flat landscape of lagoons, reed beds, meadows and bird hides between Castello d'Empuries and the sea. It is a welcome change of pace after stone streets and summer traffic.

The reserve is especially rewarding in migration seasons, when storks, herons, ducks and waders pass through. Even outside peak birding months, the walking paths are easy and atmospheric, with views toward the Pyrenees on clear days. Bring binoculars if you have them, and insect repellent if you visit around dusk.

A story
The reserve exists because campaigners fought plans to urbanise these marshes in the 1970s. Looking at the reed beds and lagoons now, with storks and herons moving through the shallows, it is hard to believe how close this coastline came to becoming another resort development.
