Onyar River Houses

Girona's postcard image — colourful houses perched above the Onyar River

The row of brightly painted houses overhanging the Onyar River is Girona's most iconic image — ochre, terracotta, yellow, and blue facades reflected in the water below. The houses were built backing onto the city walls, their facades projecting out over the river on wooden corbels. The best views are from the iron bridge designed by Gustave Eiffel's company (Pont de les Peixateries Velles) or from the Pont de Sant Feliu.

The houses are private residences, not tourist attractions — they are best photographed from the opposite bank, especially in the late afternoon when the light is on the facades. Walking the path along the east bank of the river at different hours shows how dramatically the colour changes with the light.
