The Romanesque church of Santa María de Pesqueiras sits in a near-abandoned hamlet on the steep bank of the Miño, surrounded by terraced vineyards. The church itself dates to the 12th century, with a single nave and a semi-circular apse; inside, fragments of medieval frescoes survive on the walls.
The setting is the real reason to come — almost no one lives here any more, the vines have crept up to the church wall, and the only sounds are the wind off the river and the occasional tractor on the slope above. A melancholy, beautiful spot for an hour or two.
