When to Go

Galicia is wet and green. Chantada gets less rain than the coast but more than central Spain, and the wettest months run from October to April. May through September are the easiest months for visits — long days, warm afternoons, cool nights up at altitude.

The town's calendar is built around its two big festivals. The wine festival falls on the second weekend of March, when bodegas open their cellars and the new vintage is tasted. The Virxe do Carme, on the third weekend of August, features ox-drawn carts staging scenes from local history through the streets — by far the biggest day of the year. A street market fills the town on the 5th and 21st of every month, worth catching for cheese, sausages, and the seasonal vegetables of the comarca.
