Cruceiro de Melide

One of the oldest stone crosses (cruceiros) in Galicia, from the 14th century

The Cruceiro de Melide is a 14th-century stone cross standing in the small square in front of the Iglesia de Sancti Spiritus. It is generally accepted as the oldest dated cruceiro in Galicia and one of the oldest in the Iberian peninsula. The figure of Christ is carved on the western face and a Christ in Majesty (Maiestas Domini) on the eastern; the base shows Adam and Eve, with the serpent coiled around the tree behind them.

The cruceiro stands on its original stone steps, which makes the surrounding plaza essentially unchanged in layout since at least the 16th century. It is permanently in place, freely viewable, and well lit at night.

A story
The Galician cruceiro tradition — carved stone crosses placed at crossroads and pilgrim paths — produced more than ten thousand examples between the 14th and 19th centuries. The Melide cruceiro is among the very earliest to survive, dated by inscriptions to the early 1400s, and bears unusual carvings of both Christ in Majesty and Adam and Eve at the base.
