Furelos Medieval Bridge

A four-arched medieval bridge on the Camino, just west of Melide

The Ponte de Furelos is a four-arched medieval bridge crossing the river of the same name, two kilometres west of Melide on the Camino de Santiago. The bridge dates from the late Middle Ages on Roman foundations, and the route across it is one of the most photographed stretches of the Camino — the stone arches reflected in the still water, with the small village of Furelos rising on the far bank.

The Iglesia de San Xoán de Furelos, beside the bridge on the eastern side, contains a famously expressive medieval crucifix in which Christ's right arm has been detached from the cross and reaches out — said by some to be reaching for a fallen pilgrim. The church is generally open in the late afternoon.

The walk from Melide to Furelos and back takes around an hour and is well signposted along the yellow Camino arrows.
