The Ria of Pontevedra is a wedge-shaped inlet on the coast of Galicia, stretching some 14 km from the city of Pontevedra to the open Atlantic. Around its shores, art and history combine to please the traveller: the elegant city of Pontevedra, monasteries like Poio, fishing towns like Bueu and Marin, and the popular tourist resorts of Sanxenxo, Portonovo, and San Vicente de O Grove.
The beaches along both sides of the ria are excellent in summer. For sailors there are numerous anchorages, particularly at Aguete, Sanxenxo, Portonovo, and Pedras Negras, with good facilities for leisure boats. Fishing ports like Aldan, Combarro, and Raxo alternate with the tourist harbours. The south coast is home to the Naval Academy at Marin, but large shipping is rare and the leisure character of the ria is largely undisturbed.
The picturesque village of Combarro, with its waterfront granaries (horreos) built over the water, is one of the most photographed spots in Galicia.
