A Lanzada is the great Atlantic beach of the Rías Baixas — four kilometres of clean light sand backed by low dunes and the open ocean. Unlike the sheltered ría beaches, here you get real waves: it is one of the only places on the Galician inner coast where you can surf with any reliability. Sea kayaks, paddleboards, and kite-surfing rigs are common on calmer days.
At the north end of the beach, on a low rocky promontory, stands the small Romanesque chapel of A Lanzada, alone above the dunes. The chapel may incorporate stones from an earlier defensive tower, and it is the focus of the annual fertility ritual each August. The beach lies straddled between the municipalities of O Grove and Sanxenxo and is reached easily by car from town — fifteen minutes' drive west along the coast road.
