Plaza de Toros and Bullfighting Museum

Aranjuez's 18th-century bullring (Plaza de Toros) is an unusually attractive example of the form: an octagonal neoclassical building with colonnaded galleries that harmonise with the rest of the royal town's architectural character. It dates from 1795 and has been in use ever since, hosting corridas as part of the annual fair in September.

The attached bullfighting museum (Museo Taurino) contains a collection of costumes, weapons, photographs, posters, and memorabilia from the corrida tradition, including items connected to some of the most celebrated matadors who performed in Aranjuez. Whether or not you follow the corrida, the museum gives useful context for understanding one of Spain's most contested cultural traditions. Combined ticket available with the royal palace complex.

A story
Aranjuez's bullring was built in 1795 and has been in continuous use since, making it one of the oldest functioning plazas de toros in Spain. The attached bullfighting museum is one of the most comprehensive in the country, with memorabilia from celebrated matadors who performed here. The bullring itself is the opening image in the original World66 content for this page — visible in the photo with the Royal Palace behind.
