Things to Do

El Escorial is essentially a one-monument town, but what a monument. The Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial is one of the most extraordinary buildings in Spain: part palace, part monastery, part royal mausoleum, built over 21 years by Philip II and still standing almost unchanged. The surrounding hills and the old town offer pleasant context, but the monastery is the reason to come.
