Striking Mannerist church in the old quarter, badly hit by the 2011 quake

The Iglesia de Santiago is a 16th- and 17th-century parish church a short walk from the Plaza de España. The plain stone exterior gives little hint of the elaborate interior — coffered wooden ceilings, gilded retables, and a series of side chapels endowed by the noble families of the city.

The church suffered serious damage in the 2011 Lorca earthquakes — the dome collapsed and parts of the upper walls had to be rebuilt — but it has now been fully restored. Worth combining with a visit to the nearby Plaza de la Concordia and the small museums of the brotherhoods that organise the Semana Santa processions.
