The Plaza de España is the ceremonial centre of Lorca, framed by three of the city's most important Baroque buildings: the Colegiata de San Patricio, the Casa del Corregidor, and the former Pósito de los Panaderos (the old grain exchange). The square earned the city its nickname of "the Baroque city" almost single-handedly.
Most of the buildings were damaged in the 2011 earthquake and the restoration has been painstaking. The plaza is now back to its old splendour and is the natural place to start a walking tour of the old quarter. Sit at one of the cafes for a coffee and you'll see most of Lorca pass through at one time or another.
