Morella's walls are almost entirely intact — a rare survival in Spain, where most medieval fortifications were demolished or allowed to decay after losing their military purpose. The circuit runs around the entire old town perimeter, with six main gate towers and numerous interval towers. The walls are accessible and walkable; sections of the wall walk give panoramic views over the surrounding countryside.
The main entrance to the old town is through the Porta de Sant Miquel at the bottom of the hill. Walking from gate to gate along the walls takes about an hour at a leisurely pace. The walls are best photographed from below, on the road that circles the foot of the hill, particularly at golden hour when the stone turns warm amber.
