Arvidsjaur sits in deep boreal forest and is one of the better bases in Swedish Lapland for dog sledding and snowmobile safaris. Several operators run trips of varying length — from two-hour introductions to multi-day expeditions sleeping in wilderness cabins.
Dog sledding here means real working teams of Alaskan huskies and a guide who hands you the brake bar and gives you twenty minutes' tuition before you set off. Most full-day trips include lunch around a fire. Snowmobile safaris cover more ground and are louder, but reach the high ground and the frozen lakes that are otherwise unreachable in winter. Both run from December to April depending on snow.
