Åmmeberg

Åmmeberg is a small industrial village on the eastern shore of the Vättern narrows, about five kilometres east of Askersund by water. It was built around a zinc mine and processing plant that operated from the late 19th century until 1983, leaving behind a distinctive landscape of industrial ruins and workers' housing. The contrast between the derelict plant and the beautiful lake setting is striking.

The mine buildings have been partially preserved as industrial heritage. A walking trail takes you through the site and up the ridge above the old works, giving good views across the lake to the Askersund islands. The small harbour at Åmmeberg is a quiet alternative to the busier waterfront in town, and the swimming here is good in summer.
