The northern end of Lake Vättern breaks into an archipelago of around fifty islands just off Askersund. Most are forested and uninhabited, making this one of the best inland kayaking destinations in Sweden. The water is extraordinarily clear — Vättern is oligotrophic, meaning very low in nutrients, which keeps the water transparent to depths of ten metres or more.
Day trips by kayak or small motorboat allow you to find a private island for a swim or a picnic. Several islands have designated camping areas for those who want to spend a night out on the water. The paddling is sheltered compared to the open lake further south, though wind can still pick up suddenly. Boat and kayak hire is available at the harbour in summer.
