Borås's eating scene punches above its weight thanks to the textile-design crowd and the student population — there is more good cooking here than in most cities its size. The best concentration is along Allégatan and around Stora Torget in the centre, and a small cluster has grown up around the Textile Museum in Simonsland.
Restaurang Vävaren, inside the Simonsland complex near the Textile Museum, does a confident modern Swedish menu — venison, char, root vegetables, lingonberry — in a high-ceilinged former mill hall. Tapasbaren Gnista on Sandgärdsgatan is a long-standing favourite for Spanish small plates and a long wine list. Kashmir is the pick of the city's Indian restaurants, and Pinchos has a busy branch on Stora Torget if you want a casual quick dinner.
For coffee and cakes, Nordstans Konditori is the institution — a 1920s café on Allégatan with marble tables and the city's best almond pastry.
