The Textile Museum (Textilmuseet) is the cultural heart of Borås and the best place to understand why this otherwise modest city matters in Sweden. Housed in a restored 19th-century cotton mill in the Simonsland district, it tells the story of Swedish textile manufacture, from the early industrial mills of Borås and the surrounding Sjuhärad region to contemporary fashion design and smart textiles.
The displays mix working machinery — looms, jacquards, spinning frames — with period interiors, costumes, and rotating exhibitions from the Swedish School of Textiles, which sits in the same complex. The result is surprisingly engaging even if you arrived thinking you had no interest in fabrics. Allow two hours; the café and design shop are worth a stop on the way out.
