Tullbron (Toll Bridge)

The Tullbron, literally the "Toll Bridge", is the stone arch bridge that has carried traffic across the Ätran in the centre of Falkenberg since 1761. Three centuries of horse, cart, and car traffic later, it is still standing — and it is the oldest stone bridge still in use on a public road in Sweden.

The bridge is short, low and curved, with six arches of grey-pink granite. There is a sculpture of a wading fisherman at one end. Standing on the bridge in the long evening light is one of those small Swedish pleasures — the salmon water below, the wooden houses on either bank — that the town arranges quietly and without making a fuss about it.

A story
The bridge took five years to build, partly because the master mason kept running out of money. King Adolf Frederick personally chipped in a year's salary toward the project so it would actually be finished — and his coat of arms is carved into one of the parapets.
