Carl Larsson was Sweden's most beloved painter, and his home at Sundborn is the best-preserved artist's house in Scandinavia. Larsson and his wife Karin (herself a significant textile designer) transformed a small farmhouse into a remarkable Arts and Crafts interior in the 1890s, painting the walls with bright colours and decorating every surface with folk motifs. Carl then painted the house and family obsessively, and the resulting watercolours became the defining image of Swedish domestic life — reproduced on everything from textbooks to calendars ever since.
Visiting the house reveals how closely the paintings match the real interiors: the blue kitchen, the children's bedroom with its built-in furniture, the studio where Carl worked. Guided tours run daily from May to September; book ahead in summer, as groups are limited in size. Sundborn is about 12 km northeast of central Falun, easily reached by car or by bus.
