When to Go

Falun is a genuine four-season destination. Winter (December to March) brings reliable snow and is the best time for cross-country skiing and ski jumping at Lugnet — the Nordic World Ski Championships return here periodically, and World Cup events are held most winters. The Falun Cross-Country ski race (Vasaloppet runs through the region) is held in early March and draws enormous crowds. Temperatures regularly fall to -15°C or below; dress warmly.

Summer (June to August) is warm and light, with the midnight twilight of Swedish latitudes making evenings pleasant and long. The mine tours are popular but manageable, and Carl Larsson-gården at Sundborn is open for guided visits. The surrounding countryside is beautiful for cycling and walking. Autumn has good colours in the birch and pine forests. Spring (April–May) is mud season and the least appealing time to visit.
