Dalarnas Museum is the main regional museum for Dalarna county, covering everything from Bronze Age settlements to the folk art traditions that made the region famous. The collection includes a strong display on the Dala horse — the carved wooden horse painted in bright red and Kurbits patterns that has become Sweden's unofficial national souvenir. The museum traces the horse's origins to the woodcarvers of Nusnäs village and explains how a local craft tradition became a global symbol of Sweden.
The folk costume collection is another highlight: Dalarna has dozens of distinct parish-level folk costumes, each with its own colour scheme and embroidery patterns, and the museum has examples of most of them displayed in a way that makes their regional differences clear. There is also good material on the copper mining industry and its role in Swedish history. The building is a short walk from the town centre.
