Lugnet is a large outdoor sports complex on the eastern edge of Falun that hosts international cross-country skiing and ski jumping competitions, including the Nordic World Ski Championships. In winter, the 10km of groomed cross-country ski tracks are open to the public, and the ski jumping hills are used for training and competition. The setting — forest-ringed hills above the city — is beautiful on a clear winter day.
In summer, the complex converts to cycling, running trails, and outdoor recreation. The ski jumping hills are particularly impressive to stand beside out of season; the HS134 hill is one of the major competition jumps in the World Cup circuit. Even in dry weather you can walk up to the top of the ramp and appreciate why ski jumping looks terrifying. There are facilities, a café, and changing rooms at the base.
