Gällivare is a base camp more than a destination in itself: an iron-mining town that earns its keep from the deep ore body below it, and stays interesting because of the wilderness in every direction. The pleasures are the mine tours, a couple of decent local museums, a climb up Dundret for midnight sun in summer or northern lights in winter, and the start of long journeys into the Sarek and Stora Sjöfallet wilderness to the west.
