Hjo has no railway station. The closest train stations are Skövde (about 35 km west, on the main Stockholm–Gothenburg line) and Jönköping (about 60 km south). From Skövde, bus 200 runs regularly to Hjo and takes around 45 minutes.
By car, Hjo sits on road 195 between Jönköping and Mariestad, an easy detour from the E20 motorway. Drivers between Stockholm and Gothenburg can reasonably make Hjo a lunch or overnight stop. There is a small marina for visiting boats — Hjo is a regular call on Lake Vättern cruising itineraries.
