Lake Vättern Waterfront

Lake Vättern, Sweden's second-largest lake, defines Jönköping. The city sits at the lake's southern tip, and the long promenade stretching along the waterfront is the focus of outdoor life in summer. Sunsets over the lake are famously beautiful — the water turns gold and the sky often produces dramatic cloud formations over the flat expanse.

The promenade runs from the Match Museum past the city pier and on towards the beach areas. Sailing, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding are all popular in summer. The pier is a good fishing spot, and the lake is known for its pike, perch, and char. In winter, the waterfront takes on a quieter charm, with views across the dark water to distant headlands.

A story
Lake Vättern is one of the clearest large lakes in Europe, with visibility of up to 15 metres in places. Its depth — reaching 128 metres — keeps the water cold enough that it barely freezes even in hard winters, and cold enough year-round to preserve shipwrecks in near-pristine condition.
