The Match Museum occupies the restored brick buildings of the old Jönköping match factory on the waterfront, where safety matches were first manufactured at an industrial scale in the 1850s. It is one of the more unlikely but genuinely fascinating industrial museums in Sweden.
The exhibition traces how Johan Edvard Lundström's invention of the safety match in 1855 turned a small Swedish city into the match capital of the world. By the early 20th century Ivar Kreuger had built a global match monopoly from here. The machinery, packaging, and advertising art are all well presented, and the building itself — red brick on the lake's edge — is worth the visit for the setting alone. Open Tuesday to Sunday; closed Mondays.
