Getting Around

The city itself is compact enough to walk or cycle in summer. In winter, buses run regularly between the main areas, and taxis are available though not cheap.

The most important journey most visitors make is between Kiruna and Jukkasjärvi, 20 kilometres to the east — home of the Icehotel. A local bus (route 501) makes the run several times a day; the Icehotel also operates shuttle transfers for guests. In summer, the route is a pleasant cycle ride.

Hiring a car gives you maximum flexibility and is particularly valuable for reaching Abisko National Park (about 90 km west on the E10) and exploring the wider municipality. Winter driving requires experience and winter-tyre-equipped vehicles; rental companies in Kiruna are well set up for this.

Organised tours — whether dog sledding excursions, snowmobile safaris, or Aurora hunting trips — typically include transport from your accommodation. For wilderness activities, this is the most practical arrangement.
