Getting There

By air is the most practical option for most visitors. Kiruna Airport (KRN) lies a few kilometres from the city centre and receives direct flights from Stockholm Arlanda (about 1h 45m). SAS and Amapola Flyg operate the route. There are no direct international flights; Stockholm is the hub.

By train is a genuine pleasure and far more scenic than flying. The overnight sleeper from Stockholm (about 17 hours) is a beloved Swedish institution — you board in the evening, wake up in Lapland. The railway station in the new city centre was one of the first major buildings completed during the city relocation. Departures from Stockholm Central; book through SJ (Swedish Railways).

By car is an option from northern Sweden and Norway. The E10 road runs through Kiruna and connects west to Narvik in Norway (about 170 km). From Stockholm it is a very long drive (about 14 hours) not recommended in winter without experience in Arctic driving conditions.

From Abisko the railway and the E10 connect Kiruna in about 90 minutes. Abisko is often used as a base for Aurora Borealis viewing, so visitors frequently combine both.
