Villa Sturegården

Villa Sturegården is a private residential villa on the northern edge of central Nyköping, notable as the first completed project of the architect Gunnar Asplund, built in 1913. Asplund became one of the defining figures of Scandinavian modernism, and this early work shows his starting point — a traditional Swedish timber villa that gives little indication of the spare, powerful buildings he would later produce.

The villa is not open to the public, but the exterior is visible from the street and worth a brief detour for anyone interested in architectural history. For a town of Nyköping's size, the connection to a major architect of this calibre is an unusual distinction.

A story
Villa Sturegården is generally considered Gunnar Asplund's first completed project, finished in 1913 while he was still a student. Asplund went on to become one of the most celebrated Scandinavian architects of the 20th century, designing Stockholm's city library and the Woodland Cemetery — both UNESCO listed. This modest villa in Nyköping is therefore a rare chance to see his very earliest work.
