Fulufjället National Park

National park with Sweden's tallest waterfall, the Njupeskär

A flat-topped mountain plateau 60 kilometres north-west of Sälen, protected as a national park since 2002. The headline sight is Njupeskär, Sweden's highest waterfall, dropping 93 metres in a single plunge — reachable along a well-marked three-kilometre forest path from the park entrance.

The plateau on top of Fulufjället is an arctic-feeling stone desert with marked hiking routes between wind-shelter cabins. Day visits work; overnight hikers can sleep in the open cabins for free.

A story
A Norway spruce inside the park, nicknamed "Old Tjikko", is dated by radiocarbon to about 9,560 years — its visible trunk is young, but the root system has been cloning itself since the last Ice Age, making it one of the oldest known living organisms on earth.
