Sälen is a mountain village in Dalarna, western Sweden, and the country's biggest ski destination. The skiable area splits between five resorts — four SkiStar mountains (Lindvallen, Högfjället, Tandådalen, Hundfjället) and the independent Stöten — offering a wide range of slopes for all levels, mostly forested cruising rather than dramatic alpine descent.
In summer the mountains are popular for hiking. The marked Kungsleden (King's Trail) starts nearby, and an hour's drive north-west lies Fulufjället National Park with Sweden's tallest waterfall.
Sälen is also the starting point of the Vasaloppet, the world's oldest and longest cross-country ski race, held annually since 1922. The 90 km course runs from Sälen to Mora and draws around 15,000 skiers each March — the village fills up the weekend before the race and empties again immediately afterwards.
