Getting There

Sälen sits 450 kilometres north-west of Stockholm and about 100 kilometres east of the Norwegian border, in mountainous country with few roads.

By air — Scandinavian Mountains Airport (SCR), 25 kilometres south, opened in 2019 specifically to serve the resorts. Charter and seasonal flights from Stockholm Arlanda, Copenhagen, Aberdeen and a handful of UK regional airports run in winter. SAS, BRA and a few low-cost carriers compete on price.

By car — the most popular option, especially for families with ski gear. The drive from Stockholm takes about six hours; from Oslo, four. Watch for elk on the last 100 kilometres after dark.

By train and bus — overnight sleeper trains from Stockholm to Mora, then a connecting "Sälenexpressen" coach for the final two hours. Slower than driving but cheap. Skidexpressen weekend trains run direct from Stockholm to Sälen in peak season.
