Högfjället

Smaller, more atmospheric ski area on the south side of Sälen

The little brother of Lindvallen — fewer lifts, fewer crowds, and the original hotel that started Sälen tourism in the 1930s. Högfjället is up on the open fell, so it gets more wind and better views than the valley resorts, and the off-piste skiing on the back side towards Östfjället is the best in the area.

The Högfjället hotel itself is an Art Deco curiosity with old wood panelling and a famous panoramic window above the fireplace. Worth a coffee stop even if you are skiing elsewhere.
