Castello di Sasso Corbaro

Castello di Sasso Corbaro is the highest of the three Bellinzona castles, standing 230 metres above the valley floor on a rocky spur to the southeast of the town. Built in 1479 under the orders of the Duke of Milan, it is a compact, no-nonsense military structure with a single residential tower and a large courtyard enclosed by high walls.

The castle houses a museum focused on traditional Ticino crafts and costumes, with a good collection of carved wooden furniture and textiles. The main draw, however, is the view: from this height the whole of the valley is spread below, and on clear days the plain of Lombardy is visible beyond the southern hills. The walk up from the road is about 20 minutes; there is no public transport to this castle.

A story
Sasso Corbaro was built with exceptional speed. After the Battle of Giornico in 1478, when Swiss forces had repelled a Milanese invasion, the Duke of Milan ordered the castle built as quickly as possible to strengthen the pass defences. According to the chronicler Ambrogio da Rosate, the entire castle was constructed in six months — a remarkable feat even for the 15th century. The Italian military engineer Bartolomeo Gadio supervised the work.
