Bern's Old Town has eleven painted fountains along its main street axis, erected in the 16th century and maintained in their original colours. Each bears a painted figure on a column above the basin — warriors, allegorical figures, biblical characters, and civic symbols. They were functional water sources for the medieval city and are still running today. The Gerechtigkeitsbrunnen (Justice Fountain) at the lower end of Kramgasse has the most elaborate figure: a blindfolded Justice standing on a doge, a sultan, a pope, and a Holy Roman Emperor.
The easiest way to see them is to walk the main axis from the Zytglogge east through Kramgasse and Gerechtigkeitsgasse. Each fountain is within a few hundred metres of the next. The Kindlifresserbrunnen (Child Eater) on Kornhausplatz, just north of the main axis, is the most striking and the one that stops visitors cold.
